The Board of Certification of Genealogists bestows the Certified Genealogist® credential to those genealogists who have submitted a portfolio of work for genealogist peers to review and critique. This credential focuses on methodological research. Every 5 years, a Certified Genealogist® needs to renew their credential, which shows that they are keeping up with current research trends and keeping their skills sharp.
The International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen℠) bestows the Accredited Genealogist® to those genealogists who have completed multiple projects and tested their knowledge (both oral and written examinations) about a particular region of the world. They are also proficient in the use of digitized original sources online. Accredited Genealogist professionals possess the skill to transcribe and abstract handwritten documents, analyze and interpret evidence, and communicate research results in quality written reports.
